My First Big Motorcycle Trip
The Plan
I spent several months planning this trip. It was my first multi day ride. This was going to be 14 days and just over 5,000 miles. This is a huge and dangerous trip to do alone. There are many factors to consider. The weather, my health, the bike and dealing being in unfamiliar areas. I had to buy new gear and make changes to the bike. I needed to plan my fuel stops, hotel stays and ensure my safety. I planned to stop for fuel about every 100 miles, I didn't need fuel that quickly, but my body would need the break. Plus, I felt that would prevent me from running out of fuel, although I did pack an extra gallon in my top case. I purchased a motorcycle specific Garmin for when I need navigation and don't have a cell signal for my phone. Speaking of that I also purchased a Garmin InReach mini so if I have an emergency, I can send a satellite signal for help. It also allowed family and friends to track me on my trip.
The Preparation
Prepping was a big job. I installed new lights on the front to make me more visible to other vehicles. I hardwired power for my new GPS and phone mount. I must have packed my clothes six times to try and get it as compact as possible. Not to mention packing everything for the bike. I made sure I had a tire repair kit, tools and extra fuel. One big fear was ending up stranded somewhere, So I had the dealer do an oil change and check the bike over two days before my departure. They said everything looked great, and I should have no problems on my trip. They were wrong, lol. I also did about five small rides with the bike fully loaded just to get used to the feel.
Hitting the road.
I was so excited for today that I barely slept the night before. I walked to the make and loaded it up. I double checked everything; two weeks is a long time on the road alone. I said bye to my dog and my parents, entered my first stop on the GPS and off went into the unknown. Got to my first fuel stop about an hour later ate a quick snack that my mom gave me, checked the bike to make sure everything was still secure and continued on my way. Checking the bike was done at every stop, just me trying to keep myself feeling safe. I'm really itching to get back on the bike for another long ride. It's hard to explain the joy I felt that morning.
The Trip
In the next pages you will see detail about the trip. The scenic stops and overall scenic ride. The adventure along with the issues I ran into. This is something I will never forget and can't wait to do again. The map is a gift I received from a friend. When I returned home and scratched off the states, it felt like such an accomplishment. I can't wait to complete the whole map.
